This image is a close up of the subtle patterns of the Melanistic Mutant hen. The male of this species is glossy iridescent black. The female looks drab at first glance, camoflaged to more safely sit her eggs in the nesting season. Her beautiful brown and black feathers reveal more and more detail the closer we look.
